Why Bathroom Lighting Design Is So Important
Bathroom lighting is more than just a practical necessity — it's a key element of your bathroom interior design. The right lighting elevates everyday tasks like shaving or applying makeup and transforms your bathroom into a luxurious, spa-like retreat.
Well-planned bathroom lighting:
- Enhances safety and visibility
- Improves the mood and atmosphere
- Complements your design style
- Supports both daytime functionality and evening relaxation
Whether you're updating a guest bathroom or remodelling your en-suite, lighting deserves a spot at the top of your design checklist.
What Is IP Rating in Bathroom Lighting?
When dealing with bathroom electrical safety, IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are essential. These two-digit codes show how protected a light fitting is from solid objects (like dust) and moisture.
- First digit: Protection from solids (0–6)
- Second digit: Protection from water (0–8)
Common IP ratings for bathrooms:
- IP44: Splash-proof – great for areas near sinks or bathtubs
- IP65: Water jet-resistant – suitable for shower zones
- IP67: Submersible – for the most moisture-heavy areas
Tip: Always match the IP rating to the bathroom zone (see below).
Bathroom Zones Explained (UK Regulations)
UK wiring regulations (IET BS 7671) define bathroom lighting zones to prevent water-related hazards. These zones dictate what type of lights are allowed and the necessary IP ratings.
Zone Guide
- Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower tray. Requires IP67 (12V max).
- Zone 1: Above the bath or shower up to 2.25m. Requires IP65.
- Zone 2: 60cm outside the bath or shower and 2.25m high. Requires IP44.
- Zone 3: Beyond Zone 2. No specific IP rating required unless water is present.
Always consult a qualified electrician when choosing and installing bathroom lights.
Types of Bathroom Lighting (and When to Use Them)
Creating a layered lighting scheme allows you to combine form and function. Here's a breakdown:
Task Lighting
Used for grooming, makeup, and shaving.
Best fixtures: Mirror lights, vanity lights, adjustable wall lights
Placement tip: Install on both sides of the mirror to reduce shadows
Ambient Lighting
Provides general light across the room.
Best fixtures: Recessed ceiling downlights, flush-mount LEDs
Design tip: Use dimmable lights for flexibility
Accent Lighting
Highlights features or architectural elements.
Best fixtures: LED strip lighting under vanities or in niches
Effect: Adds depth and visual interest
Mood Lighting
Creates a relaxing or energising atmosphere.
Best fixtures: Colour-changing LEDs, soft under-cabinet lights
Ideal for evening baths and low-light settings
“In addition to essential bathroom lighting, the current trend is to add an additional layer of lighting with the use of concealed lighting in bathrooms. This opportunity presents itself in a number of ways,” says David Amos, founder and design expert.
“For example, warm hue LED strips placed under floating cabinets or a bench bathe the floor with low glare, inviting, warm light. Be careful though, avoid this technique if you have a highly polished floor – this acts as a mirror and reveals the light!
Alternatively, if you have a freestanding bath, small LED lights can sit in the floor behind the bath and wash up a wall or towel rail. This is a lovely idea as, when sitting in the bath, the lights are beneath you so therefore unobtrusive. Plus, of course, well placed tea lights or candles provide warm, kinetic lighting that never fails to appeal. And, once the eye is accustomed to a lower level, it may be all the light you need!”

Which Lights Are Best for a Small Bathroom
Lighting a small bathroom requires smart choices that maximise brightness without overwhelming the space. Flush or semi-flush ceiling lights are ideal for keeping sightlines clear while providing sufficient general lighting. Wall-mounted fittings, such as sconces or vertical vanity lights, add layered illumination without taking up valuable floor or counter space. Mirror lights or integrated vanity units are especially effective in compact layouts, offering targeted task lighting with minimal clutter. Look for multi-functional fixtures—like mirrored cabinets with built-in LEDs—to make the most of every square inch. Using light finishes and reflective surfaces can also help bounce light around the room, making it feel larger and more inviting
