Steeped in character and architectural history, this Georgian townhouse offered the perfect canvas for a sensitive, design-led lighting scheme. Originally built in the early 19th century, the property retained many of its elegant period features—tall sash windows, fine plasterwork, and a cantilevered staircase—making it a prime example of Georgian domestic architecture.
In collaboration with Woodford Architecture & Interiors, we were proud to contribute to a meticulous restoration project that honoured the home’s heritage while introducing refined, modern lighting solutions tailored to contemporary living.
A Home with History
Georgian architecture is defined by proportion, symmetry, and elegance—qualities that demand a respectful and restrained lighting approach. The property, built circa 1825, retained many of its original features: fine plasterwork, tall sash windows, a cantilevered staircase, and exquisite cornicing. However, like many period homes, it also presented a challenge—how to introduce modern lighting in a way that enhances without overwhelming.
Woodfords had taken great care in the architectural refurbishment, combining historic accuracy with subtle contemporary interventions. Our role was to extend that philosophy into the lighting: discreet, precise, and atmospheric.
Layered Lighting for Georgian Elegance
The project centred on creating layered lighting that honoured the home’s Georgian proportions while addressing modern living needs. We began with a holistic assessment of how the property was used—from the rhythm of morning routines to evening relaxation and entertaining.
Key elements of our scheme included:
-
Antique-finish pendants and wall lights sourced to harmonise with period features, using LED lamps to improve energy efficiency while preserving a classic aesthetic.
- Architectural downlighting was kept to a minimum—used only where necessary and always with narrow beam angles to highlight specific features such as fireplaces or artwork.
- In the stairwell, we suspended a multi drop fitting, with seven hand-crafted globular diffusers. A modern vertical display using sculptural cable, bridging old and new with elegance.
-
Discrete LED joinery lighting in both the utility and office, softly grazing the original cornicing and revealing the craftsmanship without dominating the space.
A Lasting Impression
As with all our heritage projects, sensitivity to the building’s story was paramount. This home, rich with character and layered history, deserved a lighting scheme that would quietly support and enhance its architecture.
