Bringing Coastal Heritage to Light: A Collaboration with Woodford Architecture
Nestled in the timeless beauty of Mousehole, once described by Dylan Thomas as "the loveliest village in England", Wharf House is a true Cornish gem, sensitively reimagined for modern coastal living. Working alongside the talented team at Woodford Architecture and Interiors, the Amos Lighting design team brought over 40 years of lighting expertise to this iconic listed building, helping to carefully shape every space with light, character, and charm.
With a complete refurbishment and reconfiguration, including a new open-plan kitchen/living/dining area, cinema room, library, bunk rooms, and a reimagined courtyard garden. This project called for a thoughtful and layered lighting approach, from heritage wall lights to sculptural statement pieces, every fixture was selected to complement the textures, palette, and personality of each room.
A Warm Welcome: Kitchen, Living & Dining
At the heart of Wharf House lies a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space, an elegant blend of coastal textures, tactile materials, and refined detailing. Lighting was key to softening the open plan space.
- Discreet LED tape lighting is cleverly integrated into the kitchen joinery, providing seamless task lighting while subtly enhancing the craftsmanship of the cabinetry.
- The striking focal point in the lounge and dining area comes from Nkuku Noko Wicker Conical pendants strategically positioned to add natural texture and ambient warmth, echoing the coastal materials and tones found throughout the interior.
In the pantry, the timeless Astro Bronte ceiling light adds a nod to heritage style while delivering soft, practical illumination in this tucked-away nook.

Along the walls, Astro Kymi wall lights deliver a soft upward and downward glow, adding depth and sculptural interest to the open-plan space, which is particularly effective as day turns to dusk.
Together, these elements create a welcoming, layered lighting scheme that is both beautifully functional and effortlessly atmospheric.
Restful Retreats: The Bedrooms

In keeping with the calm, coastal palette of Wharf House, the bedrooms are designed as serene sanctuaries, spaces to slow down, unwind, and wake gently with the light.
In the master bedroom, a Muuto Strand Pendant Lamp floats like a soft cloud above the bed, its sculptural form casting a warm, diffused glow through its unique cocoon-like texture. With both top and bottom openings, it offers a balance of ambient and focused light, making it as practical as it is poetic. For a similar look we recommend the Shropshire Shade Fibre Dome Lampshade.
Flanking the bed are two minimalist Passepartout wall lights. Get the look with the Astro Zeppo, its sleek, low-profile form provides subtle bedside illumination.
In the guest bedroom, the show-stopping PET Lamp makes an unforgettable impression. Handwoven by Colombian artisans from recycled plastic bottles and natural fibres, this pendant cluster adds warmth, texture, and a meaningful design story. For further details, call our showroom.

Balancing this handcrafted centrepiece, a pair of Astro Enna round switched reading lights offer clean-lined, directional lighting, ideal for bedtime reading without disturbing a sleeping partner.
Coastal Utility: Bathroom & Ensuite Lighting
The bathrooms and en-suites at Wharf House reflect the project’s harmonious balance between heritage and contemporary living. With soft stone surfaces, brushed metal accents, and restrained styling, the lighting here was carefully selected to enhance both function and ambiance.
- The Original BTC Brass Bulkhead Wall Light was selected for its nautical, utilitarian charm, perfectly in keeping with Mousehole’s maritime character. Its solid brass construction and timeless profile make it a striking choice for above-basin or shower zone applications.
- For a refined alternative, the David Hunt Harbour Wall Light in Nickel (IP64) brings elegance and durability to en-suite and bathroom settings. Its crisp, industrial lines and IP64 rating make it ideal for modern coastal interiors that demand both style and substance.

Functional Elegance: Utility Room & Hallway Lighting

Often overlooked, the utility and hallway areas at Wharf House have been thoughtfully lit to ensure they feel just as intentional and well-crafted as the main living spaces.
- Low-glare wall lights provide practical task lighting in the utility room, offering ample illumination for everyday chores, whether sorting laundry or washing away beachside sand.
- In the hallway discreet LED tape lighting is tucked into shelving nooks, adding both functionality and subtle visual interest, seamlessly blending utility with atmosphere.
- To continue the home’s utilitarian charm, elegant swan neck wall lights were chosen to frame the entrance, balancing form and function in this historic coastal setting.
