Discover how our lighting has illuminated the spectacular Hux Shard project in Devon – as seen on Grand Designs.
Architectural Innovation Meets Interior Elegance
As featured on Grand Designs the remarkable Hux Shard residential home in the scenic countryside of Devon is anything but ordinary. Architectural concept designer Mick O’ Connor (Founder of Squirrel Design) and his son Alex O’Connor, had free reign to create something really special. With its sculptural shard-shaped exterior panels and sharply modern design, the home also required lighting that could match its ambition.
Amos Lighting was chosen to provide the interior illumination, selected not only for aesthetics but for its ability to enhance architectural geometry and natural materials. Lighting played a critical role in expressing the mood, enhancing spatial depth, and connecting the interior to the dramatic exterior views.
The homeowners wanted a geometric design that followed the natural contour of the hills. With large, panoramic windows offering views of the architectural shards, the interior seamlessly connects with the surrounding landscape. Our lighting choices supported this connection, providing warmth without overpowering the natural light during the day or obscuring the views at night.
Lighting Principles: The Soul of the Build
Every lighting decision in the Hux Shard home was guided by key design principles:
- Layered Lighting – A balanced combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting ensured that each space was functional, atmospheric, and visually harmonious.
-
Integrated LED and Wall Lighting – Where possible, lighting was seamlessly built into walls, recesses, and architectural features. This approach allowed certain elements to feel like an inherent part of the building, aligning with the client’s vision of integration between light and structure
- Minimal Visual Disruption – Fixtures were carefully chosen for slim profiles and discrete finishes to let the architecture take centre stage.
- Directional Illumination – Downlighting was used extensively to prevent glare and control light spill, preserving both indoor tranquillity and outdoor darkness.
Luminating Living Areas
Throughout the home, triple-glazed, frameless windows offer uninterrupted views of the outdoors. In the sunken living room, our slim-profile hanging pendant lights gracefully descend from the ceiling, adding a subtle, ambient glow.
The lighting in this space was designed to complement the natural light during the day and add depth and softness after sunset. The warm temperature of the pendant lights contrasts beautifully with the dark petrol blue feature wall and the textured fabrics of the corner sofa and chairs, creating a sense of intimacy in a large open space.
Kitchen/Dining Room Calm
The architectural flair continues into the kitchen and dining areas, where lighting enhances every detail. Dekton worktops and soft grey cabinetry are softly lit with adjustable pendant lights, which can be dimmed for intimate dinners or brightened for cooking and preparation.
A cluster of pendant lights above the island and dining table provide focused illumination without harsh shadows. The arrangement adds rhythm and movement above these key surfaces, and the use of warm-toned bulbs maintains a welcoming and comfortable ambiance.
Spotlight on the Light Fittings: Get the Look
In addition to all the downlights, other stand out fittings included:
-
Lodes A-Tube - A simple form that delivers the light to wherever it’s needed, enhancing the space. It can be fixed directly to the ceiling, suspended singularly, or used in cluster compositions to create special effects.
-
Franklite Droplet Smoked Glass Pendant – Elegant and moody, this piece creates visual interest above dining and living areas.
-
Umage White Feather Shade with Rosette Suspension – Crafted from natural white goose feathers, it brings softness and a touch of luxury to sleeping spaces.
Each fixture was selected not only for its style but for the quality of light it emits, soft, directional, and soothing.
A Soothing Bedroom
The bedroom is a showcase of both comfort and design sophistication. Abstract structures, linear furnishings, and a grand central bed are enhanced by thoughtful lighting placement.
A cluster of pendant lights hangs above a soft blue reading chair, providing task lighting without overpowering the calm palette. Meanwhile, the ensuite bathroom benefits from elegant ambient lighting that supports the relaxing atmosphere created by the freestanding bath and expansive windows.
Every light in this home was chosen to reinforce its architectural ethos, modern, daring, yet intimately connected to the land it sits upon.
Make a Statement with a Pendant Light
If you're looking to make a bold statement in your bedroom, a pendant light can elevate the space like no other. In the Hux Shard home, these were used strategically to draw attention to design elements and increase the vertical dimension of each room.
The Umage White Pendant, used in one of the bedrooms, is a great example. It diffuses light gently across the room, creating a soft glow that’s ideal for unwinding. The materials used, natural feathers, align with the home’s organic feel, and the overall effect is one of harmony and balance.
At Amos Lighting, we understand that bedroom lighting isn’t just decorative. It’s essential for creating a restful environment. Consider how the brightness, direction, and tone of your lights affect your sleep and mood. Our curated collection ensures that form meets function in every piece.
Exterior Lighting: Enhancing the Approach
The design for the external lighting was carefully considered to reflect the architectural language of the building. Rather than competing with the bold geometry of the Hux Shard structure, the lighting subtly complements it, creating a sense of cohesion between the home and its surroundings. Discreet fittings were used to gently illuminate low-level planting and architectural features, enhancing texture and depth without overwhelming the natural environment. Slimline navigation lights and integrated path lights provide a soft yet effective guide to the entrance, offering both safety and a warm sense of arrival. This approach ensures that even at night, the experience of approaching the home remains as striking and thoughtful as the design itself.
At the Hux Shard home, lighting is more than a functional element. It reflects its values of sustainability and innovation, and shapes how the space feels at every time of day.
Whether it's a directional pendant lighting highlighting surfaces, or a soft table lamp offering a warm welcome, the power of light cannot be underestimated.
