Glass Wall Lights For Every Type of Home
Our exquisite collection of glass wall lights features beautiful designs from quality designers. Use them beside a bed, around a fireplace, along a hallway or as part of a living room lighting scheme. Ribbed and fluted glass introduce a repeated pattern across the shade, clear glass leaves the bulb visible, and darker tints soften the appearance of the bulb and can reduce glare.
Choosing glass wall lights for your home
Choosing glass wall lights for your home
Start with the transparency of the shade and the space available on the wall. Clear glass exposes the bulb and more of the internal fitting. Opal, frosted and smoked finishes conceal more of the bulb and change how the light appears through the shade.
Check the height, width and projection shown in the product specifications. Projection is particularly important in hallways and narrow rooms. Most glass wall lights require connection to the household lighting circuit. If you do not want to add a new wall connection, see our plug-in wall lights.
The wider wall lights collection includes alternative materials, fitting types and finishes.
What types of glass wall lights are available?
What types of glass wall lights are available?
Glass may form a globe, cylinder, panel or open shade around the bulb. Clear, opal, frosted, smoked, ribbed and fluted finishes are available, along with fittings that combine two or more types of glass.
The metalwork also varies. Brass and bronze bring warmer tones, black creates a stronger outline, and chrome or nickel gives the fitting a cooler appearance. Product options include single and twin lights, upward and downward-facing shades, and fittings with integrated LEDs.
What is the difference between ribbed and fluted glass?
What is the difference between ribbed and fluted glass?
Manufacturers sometimes use ribbed and fluted to describe similar moulded patterns. Both feature repeated lines or channels across the glass, although the depth, width and spacing differ between products.
A ribbed glass wall light can have fine, closely spaced lines or a heavier moulded pattern.
A fluted glass wall light may use broader or more defined channels.
Close-up product images provide the clearest comparison, as the terminology is not completely standardised between brands.
How do clear, opal and smoked glass affect the light?
How do clear, opal and smoked glass affect the light?
Clear glass keeps the bulb visible and allows direct light to pass through the shade. Opal and frosted glass obscure the bulb and diffuse its light across a larger part of the surface.
Smoked glass wall lights use a grey, brown or black tint to reduce the brightness of the visible bulb. A deeper tint may also reduce the light reaching the surrounding room. Check the recommended bulb and lumen output if the wall light will provide more than background lighting.
Where can I use glass wall lights?
Where can I use glass wall lights?
In living rooms, glass wall lights can provide background light beside fireplaces, alcoves and seating areas. Smaller fittings also suit bedrooms, where they free up space on a bedside table. Slim designs are useful in hallways and entrances with limited floor space.
See our living room lighting, bedside wall lights and hallway lighting for room-specific fittings.
Which metal finishes work with glass wall lights?
Which metal finishes work with glass wall lights?
Clear and opal glass can be paired with black, brass, bronze, chrome and nickel metalwork. Brass and bronze give clear or ribbed glass a warmer appearance. Black creates more contrast, particularly against pale walls, and chrome or nickel pairs naturally with cooler colour schemes.
Modern glass wall lights often use simple globes, cylinders and exposed metal frames. See our contemporary wall lights for more style-led options. For fittings with aged metalwork, decorative arms or more classic detailing, see our traditional wall lights. Fittings with black frames or backplates can also be compared under black wall lights.
Can glass wall lights be used in bathrooms or outdoors?
Can glass wall lights be used in bathrooms or outdoors?
Only use a wall light in a bathroom if its stated IP rating is suitable for the intended location. The use of glass does not automatically make a fitting resistant to moisture. See our bathroom wall lights for products made for bathroom installation.
Exterior fittings must also carry a suitable IP rating and be approved for outdoor use. Glass wall lights sold for indoor rooms should not be installed outside. Suitable exterior models are listed under outdoor wall lights.
What bulb should I use with a glass wall light?
What bulb should I use with a glass wall light?
Read the product specifications for the required bulb cap and maximum wattage. With clear and ribbed glass, the bulb remains visible and becomes part of the appearance of the fitting. Clear filament-style LEDs retain that exposed look, while an opal bulb produces a more even point of light.
For smoked glass, check the lumen output as the tint may reduce visible brightness. Never exceed the fitting’s maximum wattage. Some glass wall lights contain integrated LEDs and do not require a separate bulb. Compatible options are available under LED light bulbs.
How should I clean a glass wall light?
How should I clean a glass wall light?
Switch off the light and allow the bulb and fitting to cool. Remove surface dust with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. If the manufacturer permits the shade to be removed, marks can be wiped with a lightly dampened cloth before the glass is dried and refitted.
Do not spray cleaning products directly onto the fitting or use abrasive cloths. Ribbed and fluted glass may need a soft brush to remove dust from the channels.
